COAT COLOUR GENETICS
What colour foal will I get from my mare if I put it to your stallion??
This the question everybody asks. Horse breeding is a lottery but there are certain ways to improve your chances of winning. Coat colour genetics has come a long way and much research has been carried out in this area. There are some basic rules which seem to apply but there are pitfalls along the way, as certain colour genes may give the appearance of a completely different colour (e.g. Cremello x Black may look like a liver chestnut when it is in fact a dilute black) and you are then disappointed or very surprised by the result.
There are a number of sites which go into detail and I have listed some of them here
What you might get from Treliver Decanter
This is the very basic information and there other genes that may play a part so for more detail go to one of the colour coat genetic websites for a more detailed study. So far Decanter has produced two Palomino colts, a cremello from a cremello mare and a dun colt.
